Residency: Emily Mc Gardle 2025 PNI Tyrone Guthrie Centre Residency Report

Emily Mc Gardle was awarded the inaugural PNI Tyrone Guthrie Residency for August 2025.

“The PNI residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre was such a wonderful experience. It allowed me to take a break following an intensive period in my practice, and plan for an upcoming solo exhibition in 2026.

During the residency I created drawings and screenprinted monotypes in response to stories and proverbs from townlands around the centre. I was delighted to be able to visit the centre during the summer as much of my work has focused on native plants and trees which were in peak season. While walking around Annaghmakerrig Lake and the wooded areas in the grounds of the centre I also collected small amounts of plant materials which will contribute to an ongoing project in which I have been making lake pigments to create plant-based screenprinting inks.

I was provided with a spacious studio which enabled me to work on several large drawings. Having meals provided with the residency was particularly beneficial as it meant that more time could be spent in the studio. The communal dinners every evening were a great opportunity to meet the artists and writers who were also staying at the centre.”
