“The proposed concept for my residency in Cork Printmakers was to create work in response to living and working in Cork. I found that when I was there, I was overwhelmed with feelings of isolation, a lack of community and connectedness. After trying (in vain) to create ‘nice’ work, I felt I had to honour my experience and create works that revolved around community and connection.
As I walked from Cork Lough to Cork Printmakers every day, I was enthralled by the mess of wires that were coming and going from every telephone pole on Barrack St. These telephone poles became the visual signifier for connection in my work. To accompany these, I took to social media to ask what does community and connection mean to the people around me. The results varied from passages around language, culture and ancestry from friends abroad to confessionals about learning the differences between true bonds and ‘safety net’ friends. In my reaching out, I found connection to people and place, including the ducks on Cork Lough who I walked by each day.
