Emily Mc Gardle (Black Church Print Studio)
Comhghairdeas mór Emily! Emily will spend one week at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrigh.
During the residency, Emily plans to research local stories, proverbs, and folklore from areas like Annaghmakerrig and nearby townlands, focusing on tales such as those about Cor na Péiste (The Worm Ditch) from The School’s Collection. The School’s Collection project took place in the late 1930s and involved children from every primary school in Ireland gathering information about their local area from their parents and neighbours.
She intends to create drawings based on these stories, using the residency to slow down and focus on preparatory work, which will inform future artworks. Emily will also explore the local environment, which ties into the artist’s current exploration of Irish seanfhocail (proverbs) and their surreal, absurd, and nature-centric themes.
This is the inaugural residency at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre for a member of Print Network Ireland (PNI).
